Introduction

I once saw a video of a student standing in front of a class, holding a glass of water. The teacher explained that the longer the student held the glass, the heavier it felt — even though the water inside never changed. At first, the glass seemed light, but over time, the weight became unbearable.

That simple illustration stuck with me, because it perfectly describes the burdens we carry in life. And right now, many of us are searching for peace in Christ during turbulent times — whether financial, emotional, or spiritual.

The Analogy

The glass of water represents our anxiety, stress, and burdens. The longer we cling to them, the heavier they weigh on our hearts. We may try to set the glass down for a moment — distracting ourselves, ignoring the problem, or pushing it aside — but the weight always returns. Dropping the glass doesn’t remove the burden; it only delays it.

My Personal Experience

As people, there is no escape from the burdens life gives us. Bills, food, housing, jobs, mental stress — all of these weigh us down. But it’s not only the practical things of life that make the glass heavy. Spiritually, we carry sins and regrets too. The mistakes we’ve made, the guilt we feel, and the shame that lingers can weigh just as much as financial stress or daily worries.

For me, it is often my finances. I have to pray to Jesus every day to take care of them for me. Although I don’t have a ton of money, the Lord has promised to sustain me as long as I have faith. Each day, He provides what I need for that day.

Yes, I still worry about the bills due and the groceries I need to buy, but I can be at peace because of my faith in the Lord. I believe that Jesus will and can sustain not only my needs, but also the needs of my family. That peace doesn’t come from ignoring the burdens, but from trusting that Christ is carrying them for me.

We all face it — the unexpected or unplanned expenses. And we don’t always know how we are going to resolve them or pay for them. The worry and stress hit me just like they hit you. No one likes these unplanned moments in life, especially when it comes to money, but they happen.

And just like those financial burdens, sins and regrets can feel impossible to carry. For me, one of the heaviest glasses I’ve ever held was the loss of my dad. The grief, the guilt, and the darkness that followed became part of my burden. I carried regret over things I wished I had said or done, and the weight of that loss pressed down on me in ways I couldn’t escape.

Yet even in that darkness, I have been blessed that through my trust in Jesus Christ, He has provided a solution each time. Even when I don’t know the “how” or the “way,” I do know that my faith in Christ gives me the peace I need not to worry. Jesus can take these impossible situations — whether financial struggles, sins, regrets, or grief — He can take our glass filled with burdens and darkness, and through faith, He is willing to exchange His love and peace instead.

Why We Need Jesus to Carry the Glass

Why is it so important to let Jesus carry our burdens — to let Him carry the glass? Because life isn’t about the glass or the burdens. Life gives us the glass to distract us from our faith in Jesus Christ.

When we focus only on the glass, we see the weight, the stress, and the pain. But when we give the glass to Jesus, our focus shifts. Instead of staring at the glass, we can look to Christ and His light. That is where true peace happens — not in the absence of burdens, but in the presence of Christ.

For me, this is true purpose and the true meaning of life: to live anchored not to the glass, but to Jesus. Christ invites this freedom to us as well. So why hold onto the glass and be chained to its weight, when we can give it to Jesus and be anchored to His love and peace instead?

If Jesus can carry the burdens of sin to forever defeat sin and conquer death, imagine what He can do with our glass of water.

The Invitation of Christ

Here’s the good news: Jesus doesn’t ask us to carry that glass forever. He offers to take it from us. Through faith, we can trust that Christ will resolve what fills our glass — whether it’s fear, worry, or pain. When we surrender it to Him, we find peace, not because the burdens vanish instantly, but because we know He is carrying them for us.

Scripture Anchor

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” — Matthew 11:28‑30

This verse reminds us that Jesus doesn’t just ask us to hand Him our glass — He offers something in return. He exchanges our burdens, guilt, and regrets for His love, peace, and rest. His yoke is not heavy; it is freedom.

Reflection

The question isn’t whether the glass is heavy — it always will be. The question is: who is holding it? If it’s us, the weight will eventually overwhelm. If it’s Christ, we can rest in His peace, knowing He will never let us fall.

Closing Invitation

We all have glasses we’re holding. Mine has been finances, regrets, and grief. Yours may be something different. I’ve found peace when I let Jesus take mine — and I believe He can do the same for you. Together, we can stop staring at the glass and start looking to Christ, who offers us true peace
